Shopify profit margin calculator
Payment rates vary by plan and country, and app costs are a per-order allocation rather than a fee. Advertising is not included.
Shopify profit is the order value plus shipping charged, less payment fees, apps, cost of goods and your real shipping cost. A 60 order with 4.95 shipping at 2.9% + 0.30 leaves about 34.77 before advertising.
How to work out Shopify margin
Owning the store rather than renting a marketplace stall moves the cost rather than removing it. The commission disappears, but customer acquisition appears in its place, and on a paid-traffic store the acquisition cost is usually larger than any marketplace fee would have been. The honest comparison is marketplace commission against CAC plus platform costs, not against payment fees alone. Where a direct store genuinely wins is repeat purchase, because the second order carries almost no acquisition cost at all.
