How to pick a film
The reason this works is not the randomness: it is the commitment. Choosing between forty films is a genuinely hard problem and people are demonstrably bad at it; the scrolling is not deliberation, it is avoidance. Delegating the choice removes the part you were failing at and leaves the part you can do, which is watch a film. If the result makes you groan, that is information too: put it back and pick again, but notice that you now know what you did want.
