A cat age in its own years is plain calendar arithmetic. Converting to human terms is a separate step: fifteen human years for the first, nine for the second, then about four a year thereafter.

Estimating an unknown cat age is harder than for dogs. Teeth give a reasonable guide only in kittens; in adults, eye clarity, coat condition and muscle tone give a band rather than a number, and a healthy indoor cat can look middle-aged for a decade. Most rescue estimates are stated as a range for good reason, and precision beyond "about six" is rarely available.
